Every June, the American Flag Day (June 14) and the Rose of Father’s Day often meet at this moment. When the red, white and blue colors spread in the wind, an antique music box inlaid with rose carvings may unlock the connection code between national spirit and personal beliefs. In 1864, Philadelphia craftsman James made the first rose music box for the families of the dead in the Civil War. When the copper gear on the top of the box rotates, the rose petals will open and close to the melody of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”, and the base hides a miniature flag stand. This design metaphorically means that the country is like a precision machine, which requires every citizen to stick to his post like a gear; and the soft humanity symbolized by the rose is the power to drive the gear to run. During the war, countless families folded the flags of the fallen soldiers and stored them in the music box, allowing the iron-blooded glory and gentle remembrance to coexist. Today, in Arlington Cemetery, you can still see white-haired old people putting such music boxes on tombstones. As the mainspring turns, the American flag slowly rises surrounded by roses. What comes from the mechanical heart is not only the melody of the national anthem, but also the belief that generations of Americans have interpreted with their lives – a strong national will needs the warmth of humanity to nourish it, just like a rose blooming in a steel gear, guarding the true meaning of freedom and love in eternal rhythm.
